Shorter Days — Less Sun… Means Vitamin D in our bodies are dropping….FAST!
I thought… I get outside more than the average adult and eat pretty good 90% of the time. BUT To my surprise a few months ago I found out not only was my vitamin D level low – it was REALLY low!
So, I began my quest to find out more about Vitamin D and how to get more of it naturally.
While every person is different — a deficiency of this Vitamin is a real problem for more than just me! In fact, one study says nearly 1 billion people worldwide are deficient in Vitamin D!
Here are a few things to know about Vitamin D and why you need it:
- Purpose of Vitamin D – to facilitate in the absorption of calcium, magnesium and phosphate; regulates mood and helps fight disease!
- How to get Vitamin D – Sun exposure and a few food sources like salmon, herring and mackerel. You can NOT get enough Vitamin D from Food!
- Vitamin D fortified foods like bread and milk only provide very small amounts of the vitamin.
- Bone disorders can develop if left untreated.
- Going without sunscreen for short periods of time is recommended.
- If you are susceptible to joint pain and have arthritis a supplement is a MUST!
Other symptoms could include:
- Muscle Pain
- Muscle Weakness
- Fatigue
- Back Pain
- Bone Pain
- Bone Loss
- Hair Loss
Adults should aim to get 600 IU of Vitamin D daily! Your doctor may recommend more (like mine did) especially if you have arthritis.
Here is what I am doing to increase my Vitamin D level – from October – March (I have not been retested to see if any of this has made a difference).
Because I wanted to try to be as natural as possible …I researched foods and what to eat and quickly realized it was highly unlikely that I would be able to eat enough Vitamin D rich foods regularly to make a difference.
I found a face lotion that is said to provide 2000 IU per application. You cannot overdose on Vitamin D and it can carry over from day to day – so if you get a lot of the vitamin during the summer months it is likely that will carry you over for a few weeks.
I love this face lotion – but I do not use it during the summer – simply because it is expensive! It smells delicious and leaves my skin glowing. You can check it out here – (I am not an affiliate and will not get any income from promoting this product!)
This website it really awesome for healthy things and it is easy to get carried away so be WARNED! Longevity Warehouse is well worth taking a look at other vitamins and supplements!
The other thing I do is I take a daily Vitamin D drop during the months of October – March (when I remember). I recommend you visit a health food store (even Whole Foods) and talk to someone there. They are experts in this type of stuff and can help you decide what is the best option for YOU!
